The Battle Cry of Freedom

The Battle Cry of Freedom was composed in 1862 during the American Civil War by George F. Root. Its lyrics celebrated the Union and the Abolition of slavery. It became popular throughout the North and the South, but the lyrics were changed when the song was sung in the South.

Title: The Battle Cry of Freedom

Composer: George F. Root

Description: This arrangement was commissioned by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and was recorded by them for their CD American Originals. It begins with a lush opening, then the melody is stated simply in the woodwinds.

Authentic Civil War era bugle calls act as transitions between various settings of the melody. Authentic Civil War field drum cadences propel the rhythm forward. (Percussionists love playing this piece.)

As the arrangement progresses, it builds in intensity to a spectacular ending.
