It Had To Be You

The Isham Jones Orchestra released its recording of It Had To Be You in 1924, and it rocketed to the top of the American charts. It was the number 1 recording in the US for 5 weeks, and was the number 4 recording in the US for all of 1924.

Title: It Had To Be You

Composers: Music by Isham Jones. Lyrics by Gus Kahn. Arranged by Tim Berens

Description: This arrangement of It Had To Be You begins with the string principals playing the verse out front solo. It creates a serene, happy mood, then the vocalist enters with “It had to be you . . .” and a slow, gentle swing groove begins.

The vocalist sings the first verse, then a transition inspired by Nelson Riddle ratchets up the energy over 12 bars, culminating in the orchestra playing a higher energy second chorus, swinging harder.

A recap of the transition leads to the vocalist singing the third verse, and then the Riddle-inspired transition leads to a whisper quiet ending.
